Barrett Steel extends investment in green efficiency

Steel stockholder Barrett Steel has started a £300,000 project to install solar panels at four of its sites in the UK as part of its environmental improvement strategy.
The project, which is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 150 tonnes per annum, is being trialled initially at: AHA Steelstock, Burton; Goodman Steel, Reading; Barrett Engineering Steel North West, Oldham; and Barrett Steel Services, Bradford. Mel Bray, director of integrated management systems, at Barrett Steel says that, within the next 12—18 months, the project will tghen be extended to Barrett Steel Group sites across the UK. "The project is an integral part of [the] company strategy to reduce our carbon footprint," states Bray. "Not only will the system reduce CO2 emissions, but it will also produce electricity for on-site use, with the excess exported to the grid." And he says that the company is also now working towards group-wide accreditation for the environmental standard, ISO 14001:2004, following certification of its HQ, Barrett Steel Services Bradford, in October last year (2012). As part of this, the group has already implemented initiatives to reduce electricity, water and fuel consumption, optimise raw material use and become more energy-efficient in production.
