BOHS champions Global Asbestos Awareness Week

Asbestos
BOHS, the Chartered Society for Worker Health Protection is supporting Global Asbestos Awareness Week, from 1—7 April, which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos.

'Hear asbestos: think prevention' is the slogan for this week, which is organised by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation (ADAO).

"More than 107,000 people worldwide die from asbestos-related diseases every year and it is crucial this global campaign has UK support," says Steve Perkins, CEO of the BOHS.

"The recent suggestions that asbestos could still be present in nine out of 10 schools in the UK highlights that, for us, asbestos remains a pressing issue requiring measured monitoring and managing," he adds.

BOHS has published methods of asbestos dust control since the 1960s.

The first major asbestos exposure standard in the UK, for chrysotile asbestos, was produced in 1968 by BOHS.

The Society also produced important Codes of Practice on clearance testing and bulk sampling in the 1980s.
