Emerson helps BP quadruple Whiting heavy-crude capacity

BP's modernisation of its refinery in Whiting, Indiana, North America, has started up, following commissioning of Emerson's process automation system on site.
It's one of the largest investments in BP history, enabling this major refinery to begin processing much more heavy-sour Canadian crude. As main automation contractor for the massive upgrade, Emerson provided technologies and services that helped enable the Chicago-area refinery to modernise its facility. "The Whiting project is one of the largest, most complex start-ups for which we've served as main automation contractor," states Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management. "We congratulate BP on its success and appreciate the opportunity to have helped make it happen." Sonnenberg says that to facilitate commissioning of BP's new crude distillation unit, coking unit, gas oil hydrotreater and sulphur complex units, Emerson drew on resources from its engineering centres around the world.
