Hybrid power generators specialist Firefly, which supplies the construction sector with temporary power, says its Cygnus HPG has saved more than 1 million litres of diesel since its launch in April 2013.

Andy Mead, director and founder of Firefly, describes the firm's Cygnus as a clean energy storage system that "integrates a range of power sources to optimise energy efficiency, reduce fuel costs, and cut emissions".
He explains that for a conventional diesel-driven 100kVA diesel set, as much as 120 litres could be burnt each night, whereas the Cygnus HPG can eliminate this waste and provide silent, emission-free power.
The system works by connecting a to an existing diesel generator on site, and Firefly says contractors can halve their fuel costs and emissions, while slashing noise.
Reducing the runtime of diesel generators also has the added benefit of reducing mechanical breakdowns and smoking from running at low load, says Mead.
HPGs will play a key role in London's plans to become the first city in the world to introduce standards for construction machinery – helping to cut emissions on sites by 40% by 2020, in line with London Mayor Boris Johnson's requirements.
Plant hire specialists Speedy Hire, Mather + Stuart, PE Generators and Premier Plant are already working with the major contractors to provide Cygnus HPGs.
"Cygnus HPGs are a fantastic addition to plant hirer fleets. The range's ease of integration means that plant hirers do not need to make any changes to their diesel fleet of generators and can now benefit from additional revenue," states Mead.
