Thorp nuclear plant selects Worcester

Engineers at the Thorp nuclear reprocessing plant say they chose Worcester F911 top-entry cartridge valves for a medium active salt-free

evaporator (MASFE) installation, because of their compact design and ease of in-line maintenance.
The MASFE - which replaced existing 10-year old equipment - plays an important role at Thorp, concentrating medium active liquors prior to further evaporation and vitrification into glass. Flowserve supplied 16 of the valves, which feature bubble-tight shut-off, within a control 'bulge' - a pre-fabricated and tested extension of the cell. They are now housed in a control cabinet and operated by extension stems, varying in length between 600 and 900mm, that pass through steel shielding and the cabinet roof. Four of the valves were automated using Norbro pneumatic actuators, chosen for their top-entry design and low torque requirements.
