The Poltava mine expansion project in Komsomolsk, Ukraine, is awaiting delivery of a low-speed, dual pinion ring-geared mill drive system (RMD), from power and automation giant ABB.

A spokesperson for the mine says the new plant is expected to help increase capacity of its processing plant while minimising maintenance and maximising uptime – due to its maintenance-friendly design.
ABB's RMD system comprises two 4.5MW synchronous motors, an ACS 6000 multi-drive converter transformer and the firm's proprietary advanced integrated mill controller.
By operating at low-speed, with motors driving the pinions directly, no gearboxes are required. Also, the system comes with variable-speed, frozen charge protection, a frozen charge remover function, controlled rollback and automatic positioning.
Deliveries are scheduled for October 2015 with estimated start of operations in 2016.
