Video shows how variable-speed drive saves bakery £20,000 a year

A new ABB video, produced with Energy Live News, shows how a variable-speed drive is helping The Village Bakery (Nutrition) to save £20,000 per year at its Abenbury Way site in Wrexham.
The video shows how the drive controls the speed of a depositing line, which is a conveyor-based system that divides the dough into the correct weights to make various rolls and loaves. Christien Jones, director and projects engineer at The Village Bakery, says the firm contacted ABB, because it realised that improved speed control could boost efficiencies on its new line. The drive has been programmed for four speeds, he says, so it can optimise progress of the conveyor to match the size and throughput of products. He also says that improved speed and accuracy has led to a 10% reduction in tin release agent. "We are making energy savings of around 27%, as well as savings in release agent, ingredients and cleaning." States Jones, who adds that total savings in production costs amount to £20,000 a year.
