Wireless-mesh networking and automation specialist IDC has won a £250,000 grant from the East Midlands Development Corporation to develop a plug-in wireless system to make street lighting more energy efficient, flexible and interactive.
IDC says users can expect energy savings from the easy ability to dim selected lights during quiet times, and adds that it will help local councils to meet their carbon reduction targets.
IDC's system is based on the licence free IS 802.15.4 2.4 GHz private area networking (PAN) standard.
